Eleanor McEvoy is the CEO of Budget Energy Ltd, one of the main providers of electricity in the Northern Ireland market. Since 1991, Eleanor has successfully built and sold two companies.

Pembroke Distributors Ltd

Eleanor’s first business was ‘Pembroke Distributors Ltd’, which began as a small food distribution company and then diversified into vending. Pembroke was approached by Cadburys to pioneer and develop their vending across Ireland, and in 1994 the company also successfully tendered for the vending at Dublin Airport where they operated successfully until the company was sold in 2001.

Phonecard Warehouse Ltd

Eleanor’s second business venture was ‘Phonecard Warehouse Ltd’. This company was incorporated in 1999 to market and sell smart cards for public phones in partnership with Telecom Eireann. As the market grew Eircell made Phonecard aware of their plans to eliminate paper and provide an electronic solution to the market. This opened avenues for Eleanor and her team and the journey began in Canada and ultimately led to Germany where a software and hardware solution was developed.

Phonecard very quickly made an impact on the market and forged partnerships with major retailers in Ireland including Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Shell Ireland and other large and independent retailers.

In 2003 the business was shortlisted for two ICT awards namely:

  1. Best use of mobile and internet technology
  2. Best reseller of mobile technology.

In 2004 Phonecard was shortlisted and was one of the 24 finalists In the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs of the Year, and when the business was sold in 2006 the turnover was £50 million.

The growth of the company was accelerated from 2003 and with an annual turnover of £600,000 to growths rates of £2,000,000 per month.
